Global Challenges and Prospects for the U.S. Economy

Dr. Abdur Chowdhury
Former Chief Economist of  the United Nations Economic Commission

The U.S. Economy's health has been, and will continue to be, buffeted by the winds of economic fortune coming from the various areas of the world. The stiffest of these winds continue to arrive from the ongoing economic crises in Europe. But the economic slowdown in China also may send different winds that affect the country's economics in areas such as natural resources markets.   In addition, economic issues facing other countries and regions in the world also carry to our country and, more and more, have consequences for the economy in the United States.

World renowned expert and current chair of the Economics Department at Marquette University,  Dr. Abdur Chowdhury, will give those attending a guided tour through these global challenges that affect all of us. Dr. Chowdhury will use his many years of experience in high government level economic policymaking to also give us some ideas of the prospects of the U.S. economy in facing these winds head on in the coming months and years.

Dr. Abdur Chowdhury is a global economic advisor specializing in macroeconomic forecasts and real-time economic analysis for financial institutions and individuals.

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Chowdhury has served as a senior economist in the world’s foremost economic policy and research institutions. Most recently as Chief Economist and Director, Dr. Chowdhury led the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s Economic Analysis Division located in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, Dr. Chowdhury served as Senior Researcher at the Institute for Transition Economics for the Bank of Finland in Helsinki, Finland. While in Finland Dr. Chowdhury also worked as Visiting Researcher at the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy named Dr. Chowdhury as a Consultant in 1998.

Recognized as an expert in macroeconomic analysis, Dr. Chowdhury has continued to serve as Professor of Economics at Marquette University since 1989.
